Funeral for Democracy was a huge success - Thank you Spokane!
More than 200 people, all dressed in black under the blazing 90-degree sun, walked two by two, carrying RIP tombstones in perfect sync with the PJAMRS playing Chopin's "Marche Funèbre" (Funeral March). We made our way through Riverfront Park, pausing to engage passersby, capturing attention, and delivering a powerful statement.
Three young men, college-aged, stopped their car, jumped out, and asked, “What’s going on?” It was explained that the group was mourning the loss of programs and policies that Michael Baumgartner supported and voted for the Big Beautiful Bill. The next question from the young men was, “Who is Michael Baumgartner?” If we achieved nothing else that day, we educated. We shared insights with three young men about the issues in our community and nation. This is how progress happens—one step at a time—until more people understand the cruelty and hardships created by our politicians. That, to me, is success.
Spokane Indivisible is sending a heartfelt thank you to all you incredible souls who continue to stand strong in the fight for democracy. To those who love this country deeply and strive for a future that uplifts everyone. To the planners, the organizers, the ones who show up—whether it's in meetings, at protests, or behind the scenes. To those who support each other with respect and grace, and who cherish the chance to be part of a community of brilliant minds. Your dedication keeps hope alive, and your presence makes all the difference. We couldn’t do this without you. Thank you.
We plan on repeating the event at a more highly visible location. Stay tuned.
