Republicans are jumping ship like rats escaping a sinking vessel.
We are making a difference
Republican Congress members are dropping like flies—either resigning or deciding not to run for reelection in November 2026. More than 2 dozen GOP lawmakers have decided to leave their seats.
I’ve been mulling this over for days and have a couple of ideas why—or maybe just some clues—or perhaps it’s just my skewed perspective.
I have two thoughts about their departures.
Maybe they simply can’t take it anymore. Numerous media outlets have reported on the toxic atmosphere now permeating the White House, the Senate, and the House. And honestly, can you imagine working in that kind of environment… Quiet, Piggy.
Marjorie Taylor Greene says she’s been threatened, and I believe it—probably plenty of others, including their families, have faced threats too. That’s classic mafia behavior, and it feels like Trump’s style. The Nod Father’s actions, craving for control, and use of intimidation seem straight out of a mob movie. Someone should let him know that staying awake during a cabinet meeting is much more intimidating. Nappy time in his presidential chair isn’t exactly the best look for someone trying to be imposing.
And then I had this thought
What if the Republicans are fleeing to save democracy?
Hear me out:
In the past week, a few Republicans have stepped up. Three Republicans in Indiana spoke out against the gerrymandering plan and refused to approve it. Another three crossed the aisle to join Democrats in investigating Hegseth’s “kill them all” order during an attack on a fishing boat off the coast of Venezuela. It takes real courage and determination to be a non-MAGA Republican in office these days, and the six who have rejected Trump’s plans are no doubt feeling the pressure.
Before I go any further, I’m not feeling sorry for the Republicans who are fleeing, nor am I forgiving them for confirming Trump’s loyalist. But karma has turned her gaze, and now they’re knee-deep and sinking—maybe this is their shot at redemption.
Is this their strategic plan, fleeing the scene?
It’s like a conga line of Republicans announcing they are resigning or they won’t run in 2026. One by one, they’re bailing out, leaving behind a party that looks less like a political powerhouse and more like the world’s saddest game of musical chairs.
What if the many Republicans resigning and choosing not to run for office again aren’t showing the courage or determination to directly oppose Trump, but are instead challenging him in a way that triggers special elections?
With so many Republicans rumored to be resigning in January, it’s possible the House—and maybe even the Senate—could turn majority blue before the midterm election. Instead of speaking out, they seem to be quietly stepping down. Sounds way better than losing.
Curiouser and curiouser.
My point here is, is it possible that this is the finest Republicans can do to save our democracy. Leave? Is this their strategic plan, fleeing the scene?
The headlines read: “The Republican Leaders of Our Country Flee the Scene to Save Democracy”
Democrats get a shot at flipping seats before 2026 even rolls around.
MTG was just the beginning, many are rumored to follow.
Party fractures: Greene’s resignation highlights growing divisions within the GOP, especially between Trump loyalists and other factions.
Special elections: Multiple resignations could weaken Republican control in the House and open opportunities for Democrats in 2026.
Leadership pressure: Criticism of Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump’s influence is fueling discontent among rank-and-file Republicans
Every time one of these politicians’ bolts for the exit, we get a shiny new special election. Translation? Democrats get a head start before 2026 even shows up. Imagine the meltdown on Fox News—anchors sweating through their makeup, frantically blaming voting machines, mail-in ballots, or maybe the ghost of Hugo Chávez. Because obviously, losing elections is never about, you know, voters.
Speaking of blue waves, did you see November’s election? Even Spokane went blue. Makes me curious about what the future holds for Michael Baumgartner.
The red fortress isn’t just cracking, it’s falling apart, and it’s far too heavy for the Republicans to keep propped up any longer. They’ve stayed quiet through every hit to our democracy, every hateful push to deport, and every heartless executive order that takes food from children and the elderly. Their goose is cooked…maybe it’s time we serve it to feed the hungry.
Rumors of more Republicans jumping ship in January 2026 actually began back in November 2025, and the list is bound to grow. The atmosphere is tense and unpleasant for those in the party who’ve stayed silent, even for those few who are speaking out. Meanwhile, Democrats are gearing up, ready to ride that blue wave as it keeps rolling in.
To everyone writing, calling, protesting, boycotting, and resisting, the resignations and departures from Congress are happening because of your actions, your voices, and your energy toward protecting our democracy. We’re making a difference, you can hear it, feel it, and watch it unfold. As we wait for the day when Trump and his loyal minions are gone, we’ll keep on moving forward.
We have the power!
Breathe. Resist. Rest. Repeat.

Well Baumgardener won't resign because he loves Trump and loves the money health care and retirement after 5 years. It's sick
I’ve had the same thought about Rs leaving to save democracy. Although not sure that’s the motivation behind Marjorie T. Green’s departure.
The election in Tennessee illustrates how vulnerable Rs are in future elections. Saw someplace here on Substack a list of congress people who are 10 points or less within flipping; Baumgartner was given a 5+ chance of losing his seat. We need a strong candidate to replace him.
